Abstract
Nowadays most health centers and subcenters have employed a dentist and an oral Hygienist in the Republic of Korea. However most children cannot be supplied with enough dental health care services. The purpose of this study was to develop the model school incremental dental health care programme appropriate to Korea. The model school was Bongilchon primary school in rural area. Last year the result of initial incremental dental health care for second grade, 7-year children was reported.
This year preventive dental health care services were supplied to 618 children as initial dental health care services for first grade, 6-year children, first incremental dental health care services for second grade, 7-year children and second incremental dental health care services for third grade, 8-year children. Primary emphasis was placed on caring for caries in permanent teeth.
From the collected data, several dental health indices such as dental caries prevalence, preventive dental treatment .needs, mean dental chair time per child for preventive dental treatments, number of children that an oral hygienist can treat in a year, cost and benefit of preventive dental treatments were calculated and discussed.
The obtained results were as follows;
1. Indices on dental caries such as DMFT indices of 7-year children supplied with initial dental health care services and 8-year children supplied with first incremental dental health care services last year, were decreased than those of 7-year or 8-year children of baseline survery in 1987.
2. The mean dental chair time per child of 6-year, 7-year and 8-year for preventive dental treatments was 15.81 minutes, 10.62 minutes and 11.93 minutes respectively.
3. An oral Hygienist could care for 3,643 6-fear children at initial dental health care stage, 5,424 7-year children at first incremental dental health care stage and 4,828 8-year children at second incremental dental health care stage.
4. The annual cost per child for preventive dental treatments was 1,334 Won and annual benefit per child was 10,126 Won. So the benefit-cost ratio was 7,59.
5. It was recommended that portable dental equipments should be supplied to health centers and subcenters for school dental health care services.
6. It was desirous that Dental Health Division should be established at Bureau of Health, Ministry of Health and Social Affairs.
